The Summer!! [30 Aug 2009|06:50pm]
It went by way too fast. And here I am, in late August, and I haven't updated this thing since May. Sheesh.

It doesn't feel like it was that long ago. But it was! It was a full three months that went by, and I have not posted anything in here. One reason for that would be, sadly, I haven't really worked on any comics that I've planned on posting publicly. I've gotten pretty self-conscious about my art - more frustrated with it, really, since there's so much I want to put into a comic that I simply can't draw. I've mostly just been doodling journal comics in my notebook sporadically, but nothing polished.

The kind of comic I'm working on now - basically, they're music record reviews in comic form. That's it. In all honesty, writing music review comics and posting them online weekly would be something I would love to do, but I can't draw it myself. I would want to work with an artist, and at this point I don't know that many artists who would be willing to work with me. Still, I would absolutely love to do it.

So until I find somebody, I'm just going to keep writing journal comics for myself. It's relaxing, honestly, to be able to work on comics without worrying about what other people would think of them. That kind of mindset could drive you crazy.

On the other hand, I'm still updating my music blog a whole lot! Or at least, I've been trying to. I've been keeping updates pretty consistent this summer but not at the frequency I would like to. I recently asked people to request albums for me to review, since I kinda get bored just talking about music I listen to all the time, so that's been fun. If any LJ friends wanna jump in on it, just post a request here and I'll be happy to do it! I'm not doing much else.

In other news: school's started up again, but not for me! I'm still at home with a boring part-time job. I can't describe how surreal it is to not be going back to college this fall - I've been attending school every fall for as long as I can remember, and now that I'm all graduated, it's just nothing. Time is just passing by and I don't know what to do. It's... strange.

On the other hand, I may be applying to become a substitute teacher. God I don't know how that's gonna go! More updates to follow, I'm sure.

Sean Rose Indie Reviews Comic [23 May 2009|05:16pm]

Sean Rose out of college = Sean Rose sitting around bored and making dumb comics. This one took me way too long to do. Hopefully I will be able to make comics quicker in the future?!

There a lot of updates on the Sean Rose Life I could write about here but I need some time to arrange these thaughts. I'm doin' good, though. That's all you need to know.

music comic postin [05 May 2009|03:13pm]

Put this up on my blog a couple days ago. Presumably an introduction to a series of comics I'll be working on this summer. Presumably.

Also, hey, I am graduating in less than a week! Not sure how to feel. Not sure at all.

slade - run runaway [26 Mar 2009|07:45pm]
[info]woekitten, for such a long time now I have wondered where that "run runaway" lyric came from in BNF.

And then, at random, I started listening to Slade and I came across this song. AND NOW EVERYTHING MAKES SENSE

(I know you probably based it off of the Great Big Sea cover, but STILL. IT'S CRAAAAAZY! For me at least.)

So in order to keep up with some friends (PEER PRESSURE), I have finally started a Tumblr.

Basically all I'm using it for is posting music videos that I really like. 'cuz I like a LOT of music videos. So if you have any interest in music I enjoy (for some godless reason) then hey, click right on that link!!

(Man, now I've got a Tumblr AND a Twitter account. I am officially a citizen of Web 2.0, I guess.)

And so it goes [10 Feb 2009|07:34pm]
So I finally beat Earthbound last night. The beast, she has been tamed.

I am happy that, after so many years, I have finally hunkered down with the Mother series. Earthbound is just a really sweet game, one that I feel was almost custom made for me. Near the end of every RPG I have played, I always get the urge to visit towns I haven't been to in a long while just to see how they've held up, as a way of making peace before taking on the final boss and inevitably ending everything. Earthbound, it seems, was one step ahead of me; I have never played a game that (FOURTEEN-YEAR-OLD-SPOILER-ALERT) actually lets you explore the world at peace after defeating the final boss, but Earthbound does it so well it makes me wonder why few other games have bothered to steal the idea. Seeing Lier X. Agergate criticize Ness for being "arrogant," or Frank working at the Onett Burger Shop, or (best of all) Pokey's dad drinking away his sorrows in the Fourside "Cafe" (we all know what it REALLY is) are just the icing on the cake for an already-lovely game.

It's interesting, playing Earthbound for the first time after Mother 3. While Mother 3 is a powerfully dramatic visual feast for the eyes, Earthbound's tactics feel more subtle. It's a game that's less about plot and more about interactions with NPCs and Ness's development as a character. But all the themes from Mother 3 are in Earthbound; beyond missing his mom, maybe the sweetest parts of Earthbound for me were in Ness's Sanctuary locations, where he would reflect on a childhood memory before recording part of a song. "Ness remembered his father holding him as a child" was probably the most unsually touching one for me - mostly because, well, you never even see his dad. Hmm.

Ugh. I could blabber on all night. Bottom line: Earthbound and Mother 3 are both exquisitely lovely games, and I am now depressed that I have currently ran the Mother well dry. I could play Mother itself, but God, I don't know if I could go through that.

hourly comics, ohno! [02 Feb 2009|01:28pm]
So some dudes out there on this internet decided to spend yesterday making a comic for every hour they were awake. What a nutty concept!! It was so nutty, in fact, that I could not resist making my own. Hope you enjoy them maybe!

more opinionations: Link [13 Jan 2009|06:10pm]
Having seen this image for the first time in years, I have to admit that I find it slightly unsettling. Even in old Ocarina artwork, Link looked more like a buffed out superhero in tights than... well, you know, Link.

But then I think back to what actually happened in Ocarina of Time, and I remember that Link - despite being older and noticeably buffer for most of the game - didn't do anything particularly badass until the very end of the game, when he memorably turned Ganon's head into a shishkabob. If anything, Link's adulthood in Ocarina was a novel premise more than anything, in the same way the Dark World served as Link to the Past's premise. And as I recall, Link turned back into a kid at the end of the game - furthering the proof that his adulthood was just a means to an end.

And it makes me think that this so-called return to a "badass", "adult" Link found in Twilight Princess makes even less sense in retrospect, because said Link never actually existed. Hell, even if he was technically an adult in OoT, it wasn't natural - kid Link didn't actually grow up, he was forcibly zapped into adulthood. So essentially, he was still a kid at heart, with his buff exterior being something of a facade. That's why he was a kid in Majora's Mask and, to many "adult" gaming fans' unfortunate dismay, Wind Waker. Because Link is a kid.

It also makes me think back and wonder - why was Twilight Princess given a Teen rating? Why do I keep hearing people call TP "gritty"? Was it because of the bomb arrows? Or the occasional horseback fights? Or the fact that everything was drenched in a nice coat of next-gen brown?? If anything, Princess's plot and theme seem almost a little naive compared to earlier Zelda titles. Majora's Mask was darker. Wind Waker was darker. Hell, even Link's Awakening was darker and weirder than Princess could hope to be.

Remember the end of Wind Waker, with a hopeless Link floating away in a drowning Hyrule, reaching out to the King? Remember that sad, resigned look the King had on his face? Remember when Koholint Island faded away like the dream you knew it was at the end of Link's Awakening? Remember when the moon was about to crash down in Majora's Mask - seeing all of the townspeople in their last, bittersweet moments? All of these moments are more thought-provoking, mature, and meaningful than anything I could find in Twilight Princess.

Oh, but Link could blow shit up on horseback!! I almost forgot!

Listen, I'm not saying Link can't be cool. What I'm saying is that Link being cool isn't the point. He was never cool, and I think Nintendo forgot about that in Twilight Princess, basically turning Link into a pretty-faced dullard. Honestly, I'm a lot more interested in someone designed like Wind Waker's Link kicking some ass - seeing him plunge that Master Sword into Ganondorf's skull was nasty.

Sorry, I'm going off on a bit of a tangent here on something I - and many other people - have probably blabbered on about way too much!! My bottom line: the concept of a "badass Link" is all surface, no substance. Let me put it this way: Wind Waker has been out for over three years longer than Twilight Princess, and it still feels timeless. Princess, a game that still seems like it came out yesterday, already looks dated.

oh man jeez [12 Jan 2009|07:19pm]
Remember that newer Simpsons episode where Marge becomes a steroid-ridden bodybuilder? And beats the crap out of everybody at Moe's?

Yeah, it was on the other day. I don't like ragging on things I don't like too much - really, I don't! - but God that has to be one of the worst episodes of anything I have ever seen. Ever.

I guess it came to mind 'cause I'm watching the episode that came after it now, "Pray Anything," in which a vengeful God punishes Homer for abusing prayer. So I guess the writers decided to take the reasonable message of "Homer the Heretic" and completely ruin it?? I don't know.

I know I shouldn't be getting angry about Simpsons episodes that aired six years ago (yeesh). I apologize. Season 14 for the Simpsons, in retrospect, seems like the series' nadir, if not just for those two episodes alone. Newer episodes seem to be... slightly better, from what I have seen. But still pretty mediocre.

But again, ragging on new Simpsons is like shooting fish in a barrel. Been there, said that.

The End of Mother 3 [30 Dec 2008|07:34pm]
I have some thoughts.

Yeah, some pretty major Mother 3 spoilers comin' up. )

Although I have to admit, one minor reason I was so driven to beat the game was so I could read these wonderful comics. Can't say I was disappointed.

I guess I should really play Earthbound. I hear so much about it! And Mother 3 was such a fun experience it would be wrong of me not to.

Might play through Final Fantasy IX again, though. Just because it's been about eight years since I last beat it. So it'll be a nice trip down memory lane.

HAPPY NEW YEAR, EVERYBODY.

It's that goddamned time again [28 Dec 2008|01:35pm]
Time for COMICS.

Remember this little comic? Yeah. You kinda have to know that one for this one to make any sense.

I made this one mostly 'cuz this song has been stuck in my head all week. Also, I figured I'd put a stop to these "Hill Comic" things, and I figured it worked best as a trilogy.

Oh, and here's a little bonus for yah:

Aaaaaaaaand for now I should get to KILLING Mother 3. Aiight.

...is almost done. I can FEEL IT.

Chapter 8. Empire Porky Building. 100th floor. TIME TO DO THIS SHIT.

(Seriously, I need to finish this game soon because it is sucking away all the time I would normally be dedicating to making comics or writing music reviews. But God bless it, it's a beautiful game.)
